Existing Concrete Overlay What is it?
The Ultra Surface Overlay System was designed
for resurfacing cracked, stained and/or deteriorating concrete to a
like new condition. It is no longer necessary to remove old concrete
and replace it with 4-6 inches of new concrete. The Broom Finish System
can be applied 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch thick over an existing surface
using Ultra Surface Polymer Concrete to cover up the stains and make
the old concrete surface look like new again. Depending on the job conditions
the broom finish application can be applied in a fine, medium or course
texture. After applying a broom finish texture to a surface Ultra Surface
Spray-Top or Colorcoat 100 can be used to achieve any color desired
and to create a more uniform colored appearance. The final step involved
in the Broom Finish System is to apply a topcoat of Ultra Surface Sealcoat
1000 to provide extra stain resistance and to help keep the surface
looking like new. If desired decorative borders can be applied using
tape or stencils to enhance the appearance of the broom finish application.
Applications
T
he Broom Finish System
is most commonly used on residential driveways, walkways, patios and
pool decks. It is also used on commercial walkways and driveways including
parking garages, ramps and courtyards as well as on highways and bridges.
Our Impressions
These
days there are many companies producing overlay materials. We have sifted
through a few and we have gone back to the first company we tried. The
liquid polymer we use isn't as user freindly as other companies but
the material bonds tenaciously. We created sample boards using our material
about 7 years ago. The boards are 3/8" masonite and we stamped
a pattern on 3/8" thick overlay material. These boards have sat
outside in rain and shine and the occaisional truck driving over them
without any effect! Basically any material you put over an existing
concrete slab is only going to be as good as the surface preparation
and the condition of the existing concrete. Typically surface prep means
chasing out all cracks with a grinder and filling with epoxy. The surface
is etched with acid to open the pores of the concrete. Oils, grease,
and other materials on the concrete are removed. Once this work is done,
we have a blank canvas to apply our materials.
Options
Once
the concrete has its surface prepared for the overlay there are many
options available.
- Broom
finish over existing slab. We broom a light finish of our overlay material
in natural grey or with a color.
- Splatter
/ Knockdown We spray a colored or natural grey overlay and then knockdown
the splatter with a large trowel similar to a sheetrock texture. These
are popular on pool decks and patios.
- Troweled
on smooth. Same as above but troweled smooth.
- Stencils.
With stencils we first apply a grey base coat. We then apply our cardboard
stencils that are available in tile patterns, stone patterns and others.
We then apply a color coat over the top. When we remove the stencils
the grey grout is exposed and is really popular.
- Stamp.
We place our overlay material at approx. 3/8" thick in colored
overlay or natural grey. We then stamp with our concrete stamp patterns.
We typically overlay a base color, stamp, and then we antique with a
second color. This gives a more natural look.
